趣旨説明

When conservation and sustainable use of the oceans are discussed, it is often with a direct focus on immediately tangible elements such as the enforcement of fisheries regulations. Insufficient attention, however, is generally paid to material cycling across ocean ecosystems both at a regional and global level. The proposed side event will focus on possible future governance of marine ecosystem services, including biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction (BBNJ). Among other things, research will be presented on the classification of the ocean into multiple provinces based on material cycling and ecosystem functions of the ocean that deliver bundles of ecosystem services. Presentations and discussions will be focused on the latest scientific research and findings and their relevance to ongoing and emerging policy discussions. The organizers hope to strengthen synergies and seek potential cooperation with the broad range of stakeholders surrounding these issues.
